the early bird deadline for the conference registration is October 6. Which is today. The conference registrations can be sent by mail to NSCAD University, 5163 Duke St. Halifax NS B3J 3J6

Or you can fax it to 902 425-2420.

Registration space is limited and is filling quickly so register today.

Timing of the conference & U.S.A.Thanksgiving

Hello everyone,

the NeoCraft Conference is being held to celebrate the crafts and also to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Crafts Council. We are very honoured and excited to be hosting the event at NSCAD University in Halifax.

In planning for the conference, we set the dates at a time which would fit within the celebrations of the Canadian Craft council and the Academic calendar.

It has come to our attention that the NeoCraft conference is happening on the American Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It was not our intention to offend our American friends nor create a situation where they could not attend. It is merely a coincidence. Our Canadian Thanksgiving holiday is so much earlier (October 8 this year.)We hope that many of our US friends will be able to attend despite the holiday.

NeoCraft Conference Program - When

Hello everyone!

The conference program is now being finalized and organized by Sandra and myself. Thank you to all who have gotten their abstracts to us. It's going to be an interesting and stimulating conference. We will be posting the updated information to our website and also in this forum when we figure out how to do that.(Right now it's in a excel file format)

Rather than re-type it we will make it available for download.

We're having a wonderful fall so far with bright sunny weather and warm days - it was 28 degrees C yesterday. Hopefully this weather continues for NeoCraft. We're looking forward to your visit.

We need to get the program together and begin to organize the program/ streams to create a meaningful agenda for you that you can utilize prior to the conference. Weather in November in Halifax/ What clothes to pack

What's the weather like in Halifax in November?

Good question! There's an expression we use: "Wait five minutes it will change."

We live on the Atlantic Coast and are almost an island pushed out into the North Atlantic as a result, we enjoy a very long fall season. The last few years it has been really warm all the way into December. Having said that, I must say we've had major snow storms in November with 12 inches of the white stuff which melts in a day or two. However November is also the tail end of the tropical storm season so heavy rain is a possibility.

When packing your suitcase it is best to put a variety of clothing in. Prepared Canadians dress in layers that can be changed easily with the weather - a shirt and pants/skirt, sweater and a weather proof jacket will serve you well. If you're one to feel the cold you might want to add mittens, a scarf and a hat. A pair of wind pants/ rain pants that you can stuff in a backpack while you're out and about will help you stay dry and warm in the wind/rain. Walking shoes will generally do you fine. Our streets are paved and if there is major snow the shovellers are out clearing the sidewalks early. I can wear my running shoes/ walking shoes around the city most days unless we've had snow then I pull out my winter boots.

Sometimes you might be able to get away with a summer weight pair of shorts in the afternoon on a sunny day. I also like to put in my swim suit in case the hotel has a pool (which I think they all do) and don't forget your exercise gear so you can burn off all the yummy maritime food you'll be eating!

The Port Campus is beautiful, modern and our conference will be casual in dress so please dress for your personal comfort, and fashion sense while bearing the weather in mind - just like us Haligonians.

2007 Neocraft Conference - What is it?

An International Conference on the Crafts and Modernity. Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University is pleased to be hosting the NeoCraft conference, 23 - 25 November, 2007, as part of the Canadian Crafts Federation's Craft Year 2007/Annee des metiers d'art.

The NeoCraft conference has been designed with the objective of furthur developing critical thinking, theory and history in relation to the crafts. It is the intention of NeoCraft to not only acknowledge the vital role the crafts play in our culture and economy, but to challenge the position of craft by creating a forum for lively exchange and debate.

We have a variety of speakers and themes and are currently expecting over 100 people to come to Halifax, NS for the conference. We are accepting registrations and full conference details can be seen/ downloaded at: www.neocraft.ca. The deadline for paper submission has passed. We are still accepting delegates.

We would love to see you there, come join us in Halifax, November 23-25, 2007.

Conference travel plans

Hello NeoCraft Conference Attendees

we're very excited that you are attending the conference in Halifax. We wanted to post some travel information for you so that you can make some simple planning and decision making now before the craziness of your travel plans.

Airporter Shuttle Service - we strongly encourage you to use this service from the airport. It's a travel van that goes to all the downtown hotels. The cost is between $11 and $14/ trip which is cheaper than a taxi from the airport. The Halifax airport is quite far out of town and this will save you money as well as dropping you at the door of your hotel!

Train Travel. If you are travelling by train the Via Rail station and the Bus terminal is right beside the Westin Hotel which is extremely convenient if that is how you are travelling to the conference!

Car travel there is lots of parking available near the hotels and around downtown if you require car parking.
